Do we hate the rich?

The president may be trying to capitalize on negative feelings toward the rich, floating a jobs program that would raise taxes on millionaires, but Americans aren’t going along. Check out this polling data newly released by the American Enterprise Institute.

Much of the data has to do with President Obama and Social Security. But scroll down to the section titled, “Thinking about the rich.”
“Around three in ten say we have too many rich people in this country, while two in ten say we have too few,” the study says. “Both responses have risen since 1990 when Gallup first asked this question. Fourteen percent in a Fox News poll this year said they have ‘very negative’ feelings toward rich people.”
The figures may have risen, but they still are pretty low.
Then look at the part that asks how much in taxes rich people should pay. The percentage that says the rich pay too little has fallen considerably since 1992, while only 13 percent say the rich pay too much. When asked specifically, a majority (56 percent) said taxes should be raised on those earning $250,000 or more.
This puts an interesting perspective on the nation’s mood.
