Copenhagen fiasco?

Any Salt Laker with an once of historical perspective could tell the president what went wrong with Chicago’s Olympic bid. He didn’t (ahem) treat the IOC with, shall we say, enough respect (wink, wink). You know, a Rolex here, tuition for someone’s kid at a top university there — favors can go a long way.
But enough about how this city got the games. Some folks are making a big deal about how President Obama “risked his prestige” to fly to Copenhagen, only to be humiliated like a 100-meter sprinter from Iceland. For instance, Newt Gingrich apparently Tweeted, “President Obama fails to get the Olympics while unemployment goes to 9.8% Iran continues nuclear program. America needs focused leadership.” (Read a report here.)
But then, this is kind of like the baseball manager who makes a controversial decision to pinch hit in a close game. Win, and you’re a genius. Lose, and you’re an idiot.
To me, it isn’t a big deal. One quick news cycle and we will be onto something else. What do you think?
