Gov. Palin's future grandbaby

First, thanks for your questions and comments on the meeting with Sen. Bennett. Just one obervation to UVSC and Richard: There is a reason why I asked several days in advance for questions to ask the senator. Don’t come along after the fact and pose questions you wish I had asked. Next time, get with the program. I obviously can’t relay all questions from readers, but if you don’t ask ahead of time, there is a 100 percent chance your question won’t be asked.

Now, on to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Here’s one account of her daughter’s pregnancy. Here is another.

OK, I can agree the pregnancy is a news story, but only as it relates to Palin’s choice as a running mate. There are legitimate questions about whether family matters would be too much of a distraction. And, from a philosophical point of view, I suppose there could be a legitimate discussion as to whether her daughter marrying the father is a good solution to the situation.

But a lot of candidates, presidents and vice presidents have had family problems. Would the nation be as fixated on this if Sen. Joe Biden had a 17-year-old daughter who became pregnant? Would it be a story if either candidate had a son who got a girl pregnant? Are there double standards at play here?

And isn’t all of this distracting us from focusing on what ought to be the real issues of the campaign? What do you think?
