Liberalize liquor laws?

It probably comes as no surprise to you that Utah ranks near the bottom of states in terms of alcohol consumption. This chart, showing binge-drinking statistics by state, is just one example. This one, showing DUI deaths as a percentage of all fatalities, is another.
Meanwhile, Census statistics, such as those reported here, clearly show how Utah is among the nation’s fastest growing states.
So why do people continue to argue for looser liquor laws with the argument that the state is suffering economically for the ones it currently has? Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., supports a push to do away with the private-club membership requirement. It’s gaining considerable momentum.
By way of disclosure, I’m a non-drinker. So maybe I’m missing something. I’m open, as always, to your arguments. But the one about the state suffering economically doesn’t seem supported by any facts.
What do you think? Do we need to let our hair down and party? Or will we just be stumbling around with lampshades on our heads in a futile effort to change a state image that won’t budge no matter what the law says?
